Before on my encounters with some PSPs I asked some of them on a jolly conversation and most of them have some units in their college education but stopped due to some family issues and problems arising from these. I do regret to see their education go to waste. Some of them are already in their second or third year level of their college course and needed a few more semesters to complete their degree.
First reason is the rising cost of education. It has been seen that tertiary education in one of the top university such as Ateneo University or De La Salle University cost already at PhP 80,000 to P 100,000 per semester. Other universities have an average of P 25,000 to 35,000 per semester including University of the Philippines - Diliman (UPD), a state funded premiere higher education, which ranges at P 27,000 per semester on average. Another state funded of higher education is Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) may have a range of P 1,500 to P 3,000 per semester. Daily expenses from food, photocopy, school projects, books and school material add up as well.
Second reason, Time is another factor why they stopped and cannot provide for their families. Wherein they are either full-time working and have responsibilities and obligations to fulfill in this or just do not know how to squeeze using time management principles or they live far-off place that require to two to three rides to their point of destination to get a degree or some are plain too lazy to work their brain cells and just play Facebook and video games that waste time and energy.
Thirdly, pertaining to financial problems arising from death of a breadwinner as they take over as of the burden and responsibility, a parent not providing or supporting for their education or young people just left off or runaway from their families to fulfill their dream as many of ladies have gone into this realm because of their need to support their immediate family, as a single parent PSP with a love child who were abandoned by their boyfriends or live-in partner
Fourth case, they say TESDA education or so-called Tech-Voc skills is not attractive or been frowned upon by some as off the mill school. I did have a TESDA Certification a few months ago which I completed with free training courtesy of the City Government Scholarship offer. Completing a training course could be used for ladderized education course recognized and credited by some colleges and universities as well or as a life skills you can use at home as well.
What Are their Options?
There are several things they can opt to in pursuing their college dream and landing a good job or getting out this realm living a normal life and earn a decent living.
First, sourcing the fund is a bit problematic with this ladies if they live in hand to mouth existence but most of them already have a cult following with some gentlemen that could give them some extra tip or work extra hard in giving some service in a day which is a hassle for some gentlemen who are availing their services. Tendency of them is to be hurry to get into the next meetup in a different location in which quality of service would decline.
Secondly, scholarship are available as well as long as they are accepted by the institution who are offering it. For examples are: GSIS Scholarship Programs, DOST-Science Education Institute for Specialized Science and Engineering Courses. Other scholarships from private non for profit institution are Megaworld Foundation, SM Foundation, Kabataang Pilipino, Inc., Metrobank Foundation just to name a few for those incoming freshmen. Colleges and University also offer scholarships for the students with family's earning below minimum wage income.
