Tips to PSPs: Alternative Learning and Earning a Baccalaureate Degree

A few months ago, I made a post on the plight of PSPs who went to this realm and I was wondering what are the possible ways they can earn their college degree in a very short span of time with less money to shell out. I had this idea of doing some research on the internet and saw a lot of distance learning education accredited by various learning organizations including Commission of Higher Education (CHED). It was a sigh of relief if someone who was forced to stop her education with this circumstances like financial crisis, family problem and other related issues.

A couple of weeks ago, I did received a private message in a famous social media site, it was a indecent proposal with a discrete PSPs who was looking for some generous benefactors to finance their education in which she was taking a very technical course relating to import and export of goods and service in one of the few universities located in Manila. I did not reply back because I am cannot finance her needs and wants for a short period of pleasurable moments.

I found this presentation of Mr. Randy Pacifico, a Education doctorate student of Batangas State University whom I am giving credit for this short presentation of his. I do not know him personally but I am very glad with his inputs and hindsight on this topic which I am emphasizing.

Distance education in the Philippines is improving. For almost a decade now, new technologies are surfacing from one on one talk with a tutor through Skype, Youtube video presentations of special topics of the courses, discussion of topics in a social media group thread,  module based mode of learning at  your own pace. Somehow it may have disparity between teacher and student because they make less contact and almost the communication is done through chat or email or even Skype. Final exams are taken once modules are already completed. In which your physical presence will be required to take the final examination.

My personal experience was fine with this when I enrolled in an free online program with a US based business college or university in the United States specifically in the field of personal finance and strategic investments last May 2014. I was really having some problems with the program at first in which it more of the concepts of the learning is almost concentrated on the US and international financial markets. It was troubling at first but I learned a lot and adapted on it from the mini-topics, links and content of our lectures including some of the Youtube videos presented in this online education program by Dr. R. a prominent business and investment educator in the US.  It was also thrilling to meet other people from other countries on the on-topic discussion of our professor's portal and the school as well.

Below is the PDF of the legislation made by our congressmen in pushing for this distance education program.

There are many advantages and disadvantages of earning online education below:

Pros

1. Less cost in Transportation, daily allowance, no more going to school during rainy season
2. Learning at your own pace and self study
3. Exams are taken once and you must be physical present on the campus or a designated venue of the institution you are enrolled when taking it. While some program require you to be present on weekends (Saturdays).
4. More affordable compared to traditional schooling such as photocopy materials, materials are handed to you or can be downloaded through their web  portal in PDF.
5. All of the institutions are monitored and regulated by Commission on Higher Education recognized

Cons

1. No or less classmates to interact with
2. Student - Teacher interaction is limited through Skype, Chat or email
3. Tutoring - requires extra payment for the physical presence of instructor but it is not that expensive
4. Limited to a few courses available mostly on Business and Arts courses only
5. Some employers may from on the idea of this program, may doubt the program as well even if it is a CHED recognized courses and institution is regulated.

I was able to see that OFWs, BPO (Call Center) workers Student with special needs or person with disabilities, Stay at home moms and even old people who would like to pursue, earn their degrees and take advantage in this are getting into this online education program nowadays. I was so reluctant to see the discussion of forum members of a well-known Philippine based legitimate forum site. Forum members helping each other out in sharing their experiences and information on the distance learning program. I was startled that a call center agent who was a high school graduate finished his degree in 2.5 years only with less distraction, a lot of sacrifice and being resourceful on finishing his coursework which for a traditional setting of education is about 3.5 to 4 years to finish. He took at least two subjects a month or more.

On the secondary education, out of school youth on Alternative Learning System (ALS) by the Department of Education (DEPED) have a blended mode of delivery with online learning and one on one tutorial once a week by a ALS teacher. This is a dream come true for anyone who like to earn their college degree.
